The Art of Concrete Countertops

DOUGLAS
E. SMITH When you think of concrete, you think of driveways and foundations. The concrete used in driveways is 2500 PSI (pounds per square inch). The concrete used in countertops is 7000 PSI, which is very, very durable. When deciding on new countertops, it is best to talk to your decorator or designer. Concrete is unique in every way, from its colors, style, texture and overall look. This is a product that must be shown and explained by an expert in this very specialized field. One of the top experts in the country is Steven Devorzak, of Spirit Ridge. Steven has taken over the family business that his grandfather started in 1928. The process has been refined over the years to produce show quality products. Products include countertops, sinks, tables, fireplace surrounds, and much more. The cost compares to top quality granite, while providing the homeowner with a product that is unique. The products last for a lifetime, and give owners plenty to talk about with there friends. The manufacturing process is done by forming and pouring the countertop upside down on Plexiglas. The concrete is steel and fiber reinforced, and is integrally pigmented (Color Throughout). When it hardens, it is flipped over revealing the beautiful surface. This process allows the surface to come out as smooth as any other solid surface. These concrete products can be any color you can dream up, and many textures. The surfaces can be mixed colors to provide incredible results. There also can be depressions left in the surface to give contrast to the finish. Normally granite is ¾ inch thick, while concrete is up to 2 inches thick, giving it a great profile look. All concrete can stain, but it can be sealed with different types of sealers for protection. This sealing will add a shiny glaze to the surface, but will protect from staining. Keeping up with concrete is no different than granite or tile grout. There is a maintenance schedule homeowners should follow when it comes to the care of any solid surfaces, natural stone, tile, and concrete surfaces. Understanding all aspects of the product will help you have realistic expectations of the final look. If you would like to consider this unique style of countertops, look up www.spiritridge.biz , or call Steven at 832-309-6774.
